Occasional Services

The Abbey at Minster is a special place to be married and each year we have over 30 weddings. If you are interested in exploring the possibility of a wedding at the Abbey you should first call the Parish Office (01795-871500) and talk to Nesti our Administrator. We will have to establish that you have a qualifying connection with the Abbey and Nesti will be glad to talk that through with you. Once it is possible for your wedding to be at the Abbey you are advised to book early especially for a wedding in the summer.

The basic cost for a wedding at any church in 2016 will be £486 which includes service fees, banns and certificates. Optional items are organ & organist (£60), bells (£125, only available at the Abbey), and singers (£110). Further details can be obtained from the parish office.

Once you have had an initial interview and paid a deposit a meeting is arranged in the spring to which all wedding couples are invited. This is a preparation event which is run by parish clergy and gives the opportunity to discuss weddings at the Abbey and ask questions. Nearer the time of the wedding there is a private meeting with the officiating minster to finalise details and make final preparations before the wedding.

There are a number of good websites that help with planning a wedding in church and we would recommend one from the Church of England

West Sheppey Baptism Policy

May God, who has received you by baptism into his Church,
pour upon you the riches of his grace,
that within the company of Christ's pilgrim people
you may daily be renewed by his anointing Spirit,
and come to the inheritance of the saints in glory

Baptism is something Jesus asks us to do.

It is about church, about belief, about belonging.

Therefore it is very important:- and needs to be thought about carefully.

In these parishes we welcome all who seek baptism, and we ask just two things:-

      • That they begin to attend the church in which the baptism is to be held (so they can meet the people who will be welcoming them and helping them to know Jesus)
      • That they attend a four-week evening class (which explains the promises that they will make to God in front of the whole church)

Please note that baptisms happen during the main church service.

Because we are delighted to welcome so many baptisms, it can be up to a six month wait for your baptism service.
However that does give time for you to really get to know the people and church!

The baptism classes are held three times a year (dependent on numbers) –
the next one will start on the 28th of September and run for 4 weeks (28th Sep and 5th, 12th, 19th October) from 8-9pm at Holy Trinity Sheerness.  You have to register before you can attend these classes, please ring the office (01795-87500) if you would like to register.

There is no charge for the service and we work hard to make it a real celebration for you and your family. Helpful websites for more information are

Although most funeral services are now held in a crematorium the Abbey is also available for funeral services. The funeral directors will liaise with the Abbey Parish Office to make the arrangements. The clergy and reader team from the Abbey work with the family to design the right form of service and try to reflect the family’s wishes.
